Mayson Avenue Cooperative serves as the affordable housing intermediary for the Zeist Foundation and it was created to maintain affordable rental housing in the Edgewood neighborhood.
Since 2003, Garry Long has managed the Mayson Avenue Cooperative office for the foundation, while he has served as a community leader in the Edgewood neighborhood.
In response to the development of the Edgewood Retail District in 2005 and the projected increased property values, several strategic decisions and actions were initiated by Mayson Avenue Cooperative on behalf of the foundation:
2007 | Organized a responsible relocation project for Edgewood Housing Apartment residents and 100% received Housing Choice Vouchers from the Atlanta Housing Authority |
2008 | Coordinated a neighborhood master planning process for Edgewood residents and stakeholders |
2009 | Secured low income housing tax credits from the Department of Community Affairs in conjunction with Columbia Residential to rebuild affordable housing on the former Edgewood Housing Apartment lots |
2010 | Initiated a strategic planning process to guide foundation investments in housing, health and education over a five year period, once construction of the affordable housing began |
2011-2012 | Celebrated the completion of the first and second phases of construction of the Retreat at Edgewood, a 140 unit affordable housing development with one, two and three bedroom townhome style apartments |
The Retreat at Edgewood project was such an exceptional achievement in the City of Atlanta that HUD (Housing and Urban Development) Secretary Donovan visited the site and the following year the Urban Land Institute recognized it with an outstanding design award.
